AKC Stance on Silver Labradors

Response of Jack Norton of the AKC on 1/24/00 giving AKC official position on the issue of Silver Labs. The registry of the American Kennel Club is based on parentage and not the coat color of a member of any breed.

In 1987 the AKC, in corporation with the Labrador Retriever Club of America, conducted an inquiry into the breeding of litters that contained members that were registered as silver. An AKC representative was sent to observe these dogs. The report and color photographs of these dogs were reviewed by AKC staff and representatives of the Labrador Retriever Club of America. Both Parties were satisfied that there was no reason to doubt that the dogs were purebred Labrador Retrievers, however they felt that the dogs were incorrectly registered as silver. Since the breed standard at the time described chocolate as ranging in shade form sedge to chocolate, it was felt that the dogs could more accurately be described as chocolate rather than silver. This remains the current policy of the American Kennel Club.

How We Got Started:

Silver Lining Labradors is a small family owned operation that specializes in breeding AKC Silver Labradors. Our operation is just outside of Volga, IA which is located in the beautiful rolling hills of Clayton County, only 35 minutes West of the Mississippi river.

Our story dates back to over 10 years ago when I selected Brutis, a black lab to be a part of my family. It was from him that stemmed our love for this breed and brought us to where we are today. Our goal at Silver Lining Labradors is to provide the best quality lab for you and your family whether you are looking for a great hunting partner or loving companion.

We strongly believe that our Labs have some of the best temperaments you will come in contact with. The loyalty, willingness to please, and drive are what makes these dogs such a wonderful breed. Our labs are AKC registered and OFA hip certified. Our current silver breeding pair (Jorja) of Silver Lining Labradors & (Gunther) of CaveInn Labradors are expecting a litter of all Silver and Charcoal pups September 10th, 2016. We are very eager to meet these pups as both parents are stunning in both looks and personality.

For this litter, we chose to breed with CaveInn Labradors stud male “Gunther Silver Smoke”. Gunther is a Charcoal male, medium to large in size weighing around 80lbs. He is a remarkable dog in both looks and attitude. Gunther has a very attractive pedigree and personality. We were happy to have found such a nice sire for our upcoming litter with Jorja.

Jorja; Our female at Silver Lining Labradors is a strong medium build (65lbs) with a great looking head, body, and otter tail. Jorja has a great energy level and strong nose. Her willingness to please, persistence, and loving personality makes her a joy to have. We are very excited to see the pups that come from these two!
